Eclamptic vs Epileptic Seizures in the Labor and Delivery Unit

Abstract

We present a case of a 35-year-old pregnant female with a medical history notable for epilepsy who presented to the Labor and Delivery floor and was found to be having active seizures in the triage lobby prior to evaluation. The patient was emergently intubated for airway protection and brought to the Surgical ICU for initial stabilization; subsequently, the patient was taken to the OR for Cesarean section for definitive management for presumed eclamptic seizures. Here, we will discuss presentation, management, anesthetic considerations, and differentiation of eclampsia and epilepsy in pregnancy.
