Abstract
As more anesthesiology graduates consider locum tenens work after residency, it’s important to understand the full spectrum of this career path. This session explores the benefits, challenges, and long-term implications of locums through the lens of “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” We’ll discuss the appeal of flexibility, higher pay, and exposure to diverse practice settings. We’ll also address the downsides: lack of familiarity with teams and systems, potential safety concerns, and the emotional toll of constant transitions. Finally, we’ll examine how transient work can erode professional identity, limit opportunities for mentorship and growth, and challenge one’s sense of purpose. Trainees will leave with a nuanced understanding of locums work and practical insights to help them decide whether it’s the right fit after residency.
