From the Operating Room to the Capitol Building: Training Anesthesiology Residents to Advocate Through Simulation

Abstract
Legislative decisions directly influence anesthesia practice, patient safety, and access to care, yet formal advocacy training during anesthesiology residency remains limited. A survey given to anesthesiology residents demonstrated low confidence in discussing health policy topics. To address this gap, we developed a simulation-based curriculum in which residents participated in a structured encounter with a standardized legislator followed by a guided debriefing focused on advocacy communication and strategy. This educational intervention explores the feasibility of simulation as a tool to enhance residents’ advocacy skills and confidence in engaging in health policy discussions.
