Abstract

Introduction: The Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a very effective form of contraception for patients. It can provide contraception effective as sterilization but reversible. The immediate postpartum period is an opportunity to initiate effective contraception to help lengthen pregnancy intervals and improve maternal outcomes. There has been much data to support the safety and efficacy of immediate postpartum IUD insertion. We initiated immediate postpartum IUD protocol at Corewell Heath Dearborn last year. Methods: This is a quality improvement project to evaluate inpatient post placental IUD insertion uptake from August 01, 2024 to Jan 31, 2025. The number of levonorgestrel 52mg IUD, levonorgestrel 19.5mg IUD, and Paragard intrauterine copper IUD inserted in the immediate postpartum periods both after vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery were analyzed. Results: During the six months between Aug 2024 to Jan 2025, 50 IUDs were inserted in postpartum patients. The vast majority inserted were levonorgestrel 52mg IUD at 92% compared to levonorgestrel 19.5mg IUD at 2% and Paragard intrauterine copper IUD at 6%. We did see a trend with an increase in IUD insertion over time. Conclusions: The results from our study revealed that at Corewell Health Dearborn immediate post placental IUD insertion was successfully initiated and has become more utilized.
