Abstract
This case describes the anesthetic management of a term female infant born at 39 weeks gestation via vaginal delivery after induction of labor due to a prenatally diagnosed parietal-occipital encephalocele. At five weeks of age, the child presented for surgical repair with pediatric neurosurgery. There was careful planning for the induction and airway management due to the posterior location of the encephalocele. To avoid pressure on the defect, the infant was suspended in the air during induction and intubation. Inhalational induction was performed while maintaining spontaneous ventilation followed by intubation with a GlideScope while in suspension.
