Abstract

A 24yo post-surgical poly-trauma patient was managed in the SICU for a variety of metabolic and respiratory derangements. Her care was complicated by post-trauma and post-surgical pain and severe anxiety and agitation. Polypharmacy used to treat the pain and anxiety became a barrier to extubation and complicated her ICU course. With this case, we discuss the challenges of pain and anxiety management in the SICU, particularly as they relate to weaning from the ventilator.
